JE1 Task 1

Forms of Storytelling

There are lots of games in the games industry and many games take inspiration from other media from books to movies.

Text

Many video games stem from Text, text covers a large variety of media from Novels to Comic Books. An example of this is the video game Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. This video game is based on the Graphic story called Scott Pilgrim. The game takes influence from the graphic novel in great ammount, from the story to the settings to the enemies. Examples of this is that the currency of the game is Canadian money as the game takes place in Canada. The story of the game is largely the same with some leniencies as the game is more focused on the action, in the game you play as the main characters and you fight against the bosses in the same way as the novel.

The novel helped create the video game as the novel had set out nearly all the components needed to create the game like the story, characters, setting and more. This aids the video game development as the team does not have to develop any of these concepts more as they are already set in stone.

 Theatre

Games can also be influenced my theatre, an example of a game that is influenced by theatre is the game Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Where this game draws its theatre inspirations is in the Battle Systems. This games battles are set on a stage with the the characters on the stage being considered the actors. The battle stage looks like a performance stage as it has all the things you would expect, at the start of the game you have a basic stage with little to interact with, you would ave a basic wooden stage with the backdrops being related to the area that you are in. Also as the game goes on you gain more viewers and your stage advances. near the end of the game the stage is the best that you can get with random events happening like the backdrop falling down and doing damage or the fog machines going off and making the enemies invisible.

This makes the game better as it is fresh as it allows new things that were impossible to with a basic RPG battle system.

Film

There are also alot of video games based on Films, a good example of this is the video game is the game The Incredibles. The game has the basic layout for the game as it already has the story in place and the characters also. The game uses all of the powers that the characters have to their advantage to create level designs around their abilities. Levels designed around the players abilities allow for interesting and compelling gameplay to keep the player interested. Even though the game is inspired from a children's movie it is still a difficult game.

TV

Dragon Ball Z is a Animated TV Series based on the adventures and battles of the the main cast. There are many video games that take inspiration from the whole Dragon Ball series. The game that i will focus on is Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3, this is a fighting video game with goes through the story of Dragon Ball Z. Like the previous points (film, theatre and text) the story is already there as well as the characters, this allows the developers to focus more on the gameplay

JE1 Task 2

First Person Shooter (FPS)

The perspective of FPS games is used in storytelling to help tell the story, when playing an FPS you feel like that you are the one playing in the game rather then controlling the characters. When you feel like you are in the game you feel a closer connection to the other characters in the game which can help convey the story and help your decision making in the game. A good example of a game that uses this type of storytelling is the Bioshock games, these games stories are a big part of the game and the experience and you feel a connection to the characters in the game.

Third Person Shooter (TPS)

The perspective of the TPS helps convey a more cinematic story. A game that accommodates this style is the Walking Dead Video Game, this is a third person game with a heavy emphasis on the story. Since the third person allows for the game to be more cinematic there are very intense scenes which wouldn't work in the First person. Also this allows you to see more of the environment and helps you find things that would be harder in the first person.

Role Playing Game (RPG)

Role playing games helps the story due to you playing a role, RPG's encompass a large range of ideas and sub genres. RPG's helps tell a story that are quite fantasy like, the story can be based around your level in RPG's. A game that is like this is the game Fallout New Vegas, this game uses level ups to help progress the story although its not entirely needed. the story is based around the decisions that you make in the various dialogue options.

Fighting Game

Most fighting games stories consist of fighting various opponents to reach and end goal be it a tournament win or defeating the final boss and saving the world. An example of this is the game Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4. This game continues the story from when the previous games left off and the main focus is defeating the enemy even when the odds are heavily stacked in their favour. The stacked battles helps give the player the urgency of the fight that the characters may of felt in the story.

Sport

Sport games are mostly about defeating the enemy team and keeping on getting better. An example of a game in this style is the game are the WWE games, there are a lot of WWE games and a lot of them have modes where you can relive moments of the past with big matches. These matches tell the story of the match and sometime they have the promo's of the match to add to the story.

Strategy

Strategy games can help tell stories of huge battle like the battles of the World Wars, a good example of this is Command and Conquer: Red Alert. This game tells the story of a WW2 time era with huge war with lots of strategy, this helps due to the game being heavily based on strategy.

Simulation

Sims is a good example of a game helping tell a story with simulation. The sims allows you to create characters to live the live you choose for them, when playing the game you create the story, you tell the characters what to do and you give them preferences which enhances the story.

JE1 Task 3

Stereotypes

Within the games industry there are many stereotypes in many different games. An example of a stereotype in a video game is Mario, In Super Mario 64 when the player is idle for a certain amount of time Mario goes to sleep. When asleep he sleep talks some Italian stereotypes, the sleep talk implies that Mario is dreaming about various Italian food such as Spaghetti and Ravioli. This can be seen as an Italian stereotype.

Gender

Other stereotypes present in video games are that Male characters are the bulkier and stronger in game genres like RPG's. Men are stereotyped into the classes like Warrior and Tank. Meanwhile women could be stereotyped into roles such as Sorcerer and Healer. Women are also sometimes made into the character to character that would need saving and they would be the inspiration for the main character to save them.

Characterization

Games are characterizes by rules and goals, all games have an end goal which the player would aim to get to, in fighting games the objective would be to reduce the opponents health to 0 or to knock them off the fighting area. Modern shooting games are based on killing the opponent to get the most kills or to reduce the enemy teams lives/tickets to 0. Platformer games would have the goal of reaching the end of the level or collecting all of the collectibles in the level do advance.

JE1 Task 4

Happiness

Kirby is a video game character that is knows for being a happy little character. The kirby games are always bright, colourful and happy. Everything in the kirby universe is happy and the story's are based around brining happiness back to the kingdom due to someone trying to take it away from them. When happiness is taken away from the kingdom the motivation of getting it back motivates Kirby into saving the people of the kingdom. The happiness drives the story forward, even though the kirby games are not the most story driven games, that happiness motive is still present.

Vengeance

In the Tekken games there is a character that seeks revenge and that is his drive for the story. Kazuya Mishima is the son of Heihachi Mashima and the man Kazuya seeks is him. Heihachi threw Kazuya off a cliff to test the young boys strength. Kazuya now seeks revenge and that is the motivation for that characters story. You play as Kazuya beating the rest of the characters to reach Heihachi.

Fear

The emotion of fear is used alot in the game industry to produce reactions. A game that uses fear is the Video Game Metroid: Fusion, this game uses fear as a main part of the story as there is a very powerful evil lurking in the space station that you are in. The fear is so strong that you are forced to flee/hide when you are near it just to not get killed due to its overwhelming strength. The SA-X is an organism that infected Samus (The main character) and stole all of her abilities which made it extremely powerful, when Samus was infected she was left powerless as her armour and weapons had to be surgically removed from her body. She was left with only a weak arm cannon which made it difficult to kill even the most basic enemy, this entices fear due to the player being quite weak.

Anger

The emotion of fear can be used in video games to give motivation to reach a certain goal. An example of this is in the video game Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3. Within the story anger is used to give characters a boost in power to beat the enemy at hand, the battle between Goku and Frieza is intense with lots of emotions in the mix, as the fight draws to a close Frieza kill a character that is close to Goku, this pushes Goku over the edge and awakens a dormant power deep inside him, this gives him the power needed to finish Frieza.

Perseverance

Darks Souls uses the perseverance to keep players interested in the story, the game can be extremely difficult so players have to persevere to keep progressing through the game. The game is based on learning with your mistakes and making it further ahead each time you play. You have to learn the patterns of the enemies and the bosses to learn when to counter attack and to do the most damage.

Heroism

Lots of characters in video games exhibit heroism, many characters are heroes of their stories/games, an example of this is the video game Gotcha Force, This little known game's main character is called G-Red, his goal is to stop the destruction of earth from the invasion from the Death Borgs. G-Red is the main hero of this game and he is constantly fending off the invasion and getting stronger and gaining allies along with his Human Companion Kou.

Valour

In the video game Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 the character Minato is seen in battle against a seemingly impossible threat, the Nine Tailed Fox. He stares death in the face and comes out even, sealing the Nine Tails away into his infant son but also losing his life in the progress. His valour is strong as he protects everyone in his village with no regard for his own, he shows this by sacrificing himself so that the village is safe from the Nine Tails.

Hope

The Walking Dead video game is a game based on choices and harsh decisions. The 2 characters Lee and Clementine both have hopes for this zombie apocalypse. Clementine hopes to find her parents that failed to com back to her at the beginning of the game. Lee hopes to keep Clementine safe even if it risks his life in the process. Hope fuels both of these characters and they both have goals to reach.

Competitiveness

Pokemon is a video game based on competitiveness. All of the Pokemon video game have another character that is considered your rival. Having a rival always means that someone is one your level and there will always be a challenge awaiting you. Even though the rival battles have gotten more friendly since the originals the sense of competitiveness is still there. Another big part of the Pokemon games is the Elite 4, throughout your journey this end goal is always talked about as seen as the crowning achievement of the Pokemon universe.
