JE1 Task 5

Cinematics/Trailer

Cinematics/Trailers are artistic looks at games before they are released, these are used to build hype and tell small parts of the story of the game. Trailers can used gameplay from the actual game to show the viewer what exactly they would be playing if they were to buy the game, although Cinematics can be seen as over dramatization of the product as the use of CGI can be used much more freely then gameplay. An example of this is the Cinematic of the video game League of Legends, the cinematic is called "A New Dawn". This cinematic takes a normal occurrence in the game (a player chasing another player) and turns it into a stylized piece of work.

Cut Scene

Cut Scenes are parts in video game stories where the player loses control and a pre-determined sequence is played. This in video games helps tell more of the story of the game. These would be placed in places where important events happen and it would put you on a determined path to follow as you had no control on what was going to happen as you had no control in the cutscene.

Triggered Event

Triggered events in video games have been around for a long time, they can be used to add little bits to the story, an example of this is when you would walk close to certain characters they would talk to you or you would overhear them talking about something, an example of this is in Half Life 2, when you go near characters you can sometime hear then talking about certain things relating to the story. Another example of a triggered event is in the game Fallout: New Vegas, you follow this person that is leading you somewhere and he talks to you demanding your money or you will be killed by an ambush, they are weak enemies so they die quite quickly.

Player Control

In the game The Walking Dead, the players choice decide everything in that game, they decide who likes and dislikes you, they decide what path you take in the story and it also controls who lives and who dies. This give the player immense control over the story which helps shape the story to their liking. Examples of the player control in this game the the character Ben, Lee has to decide if tries to help him or not,

Character Customization

In games that allow you to customize/create your own character help you immerse yourself into the game, if you based the character on yourself it would make you play a little bit differently as you would be playing you in a video game, not another character. An example of this is the game Fallout: New Vegas, in this you get to create your own character, this makes it feel like its you who is saving the world or dooming the world as the character you created would look like you.
